Aquila Barn – The Region - North West Tasmania

Aquila Barn is ideally located as a central base from which to discover the secrets of Tasmania's magnificent and diverse North-West. Tulip season brings a spectacular symphony of colour to Table Cape, followed by the no-less spectacular flowerings of iris and lilies.  The entire region, always a dynamic matrix of colour, then excels as pale pink opium poppies and intense white pyrethrum crops bloom, blanketing the fields in tumbling swaths of colour.

Wynyard has an extensive network of scenic walking trails, from gentle river walks on the banks of Inglis River, where the not so illusive, platypus frolic, to foreshore strolling pathways, and headland cliff trails to the lighthouse - a sentinel to the tulip field of Table Cape, to the many lesser explored forest reserves and hinterland parks.

Radiating out to the country hamlets such as Elliot, Yolla, Waratah one is assured a genuine country hospitality. A sense of welcome is similarly assured in the charming historic, coastal settlements such as Boat Harbour, Sisters Beach, Stanley, or east to the Port of Burnie and from there to Ulverstone and the quaint Penguin - all have there own intrigue.

The heart of the Waratah/Wynyard region is undoubtedly the enchanted forests of the Tarkine, and from there to the mist enshrouded peaks and crags of Tasmanias iconic Cradle Mt National Park.

The Tarkine is a rich tapestry of natural and cultural diversity, wild yet accessibly. A vast emotive region of tangled forests representing the last expanse of temperate rain forest in the world today - echoing a formidable shipwreck history, a rugged and tumultuous coastline is strewn with the forest timbers carried down in the inky black, tannin rich, flood waters of the Arthur and Pieman rivers - rivers that reflect the antiquity of their forest canopy.

One can venture out and explore Tasmanias iconic treasures - World Heritage Wilderness Regions, and pristine National Parks - Cradle Mt to Rocky Cape - the evocative Tarkine, the magnificent isolation of the West Coast, returning invigorated at days end to the comforts of the Barn.

On both the Arthur and Pieman Rivers daily cruises venture into the forest depths and there are many guided or self drive/bike/kayak/walking option to explore. We offer our guests the opportunity to tailor exploration of the Tarkine on ATV/4wheel drive vehicles. Extensive information is also available to help plan a weekend, a month, or be seduced - a life-time of discovery, through Discover Tasmania   www.discovertasmania.com.au
